These off beat hi hat patterns can be very tricky. If you are not used to it, start slow and if needed, separate the hi hat and snare parts and then do the same with hi hat and bass drum.
With 16th notes, these D N' B grooves are getting busy and interesting. It's extremely important to start slow and to play as accurately and consistently as possible. Remember to approach the grooves as a drum machine and pay attention to the different accents.
Playing short and long buzz strokes within a groove is a very important element and can be heard commonly in Drum N' Bass music. These exercises will help you get a tight buzz stroke, which is very important to this style. Take it slowly and make sure you can control the length of the buzz.
These grooves incorporate five and nine double stroke rolls in 16th and 32th notes. Start slowly to get comfortable moving from the snare to the hi hat. If you cannot play rolls at list at 90BPM - practice the roll by itself first and then work on these grooves.
In this section, we will practice linear Drum N' Bass grooves in 8th notes. They might look easy at first, but they are not; they can be very tricky, so start slow. Remember that no two limbs are playing simultaneously. This will prepare you for the next section where we are going to practice linear grooves with 16th.
The idea in this section is the same as in the previous 8th note linear grooves, except with 16th notes. These begin to sound like Drum N' Bass grooves that can be heard on albums. Some grooves have a phrasing that goes over the bar line - they might sound like an odd time signature patterns.
If you have come this far, it's time to put it all together. In this section, we will practice grooves that incorporate 8th notes and 16th notes, we have linear parts, buzzes and rolls. Start slowly until you get comfortable enough to speed up. Remember that good timing, sound and feel are much more important than playing fast.
Sagy Ben-Or was born in Haifa, Israel on April 7th, 1977. He started his musical education at the age of 14 and by the time he was in high school, he was playing with local bands, while learning from the best teachers in Israel.
Sagy was first influenced by a fusion music at the age of 16 and immediately had a connection with drummers like Dave Weckl, Vinnie Colaiuta, Steve Gadd and many other great drummers.
In 2004 Sagy moved to L.A to join the LAMA – LA Music Academy – to sharpen his drumming skills and to meet great teachers such as Ralph Humphrey, Joe Porcaro, Mike Packer and many others.
Soon after, Sagy began teaching at various music & drumming schools and eventually opened his own drumming school and focused on teaching private lessons.
